Matariki Pootete | Skirt
Pōtete | Wrap Skirt
Whakapākehā | English Translation
Pōtete = Tie together
Each piece in the Matariki collection has a special hononga (connection) to one of the nine whetū (stars) of Matariki.
This Pōtete Skirt is connected to Matariki.
Matariki signifies hope, reflection, gathering of people, and our bond with te taiao (nature). It’s linked to hauora (health) and sometimes seen as a sign of good fortune.
This star is widely known as the mother of the cluster. She supports, and encourages her 8 tamariki (children). If Matariki appears bright in the night sky, it signifies luck, peace, and well-being. When observed during illness, it’s a hopeful sign of recovery, as affirmed by the whakataukī below.
Matariki, huarahi ki te oranga tangata
Matariki, pathway to wellbeing
