Matariki Collection
Each piece in the Matariki collection has a special hononga (connection) to one of the nine whetū (stars) of Matariki.
This Pōtete is connected to Waitī. It is a wrap skirt made from beautiful blue silk organza.
Waitī has a hononga (connection) with all freshwater and their nurturing sustenance.
Their connection to freshwater beings is mirrored in the whakataukī below.
Ka kitea a Matariki ka rere te korokoro
When Matariki is seen, the lamprey migrates
Korokoro, also known as lamprey, journey from the ocean to freshwater streams for spawning when Waitī graces the morning sky. Should the light of Waitī dim at her rise, freshwater nourishment shall be scarce. Yet, a clear sighting of her promises bountiful blessings.
